For the last three weeks, I’d promised not to leave the house—and until this moment… I’d done just that. But after our heartfelt moment in the shower, my feelings got the better of me when they left to meet with Agent Jackson. I knew they were doing it to protect me but being left out sucked.

So, what did I do? I called a cab. After I disarmed the security system, ensuring my ability to get out would go unnoticed, I sauntered down the long driveway and waited for my ride to arrive. Turning off the system was risky, but I knew it would trip an alert to Michael’s phone if I didn’t.

The driver looked at me like I was crazy when I slipped into the backseat. Fortunately, he didn’t say much and kept his eyes on the road. That should have been my first clue that something was wrong. My brain seemed to catch up with the fact we weren’t heading in the direction I’d given the driver.

“Excuse me.” I leaned forward, trying to get his attention. “You’re going the wrong way.”

He glanced into the rear-view mirror and swallowed. On further inspection, I realized he was covered in a sheen of sweat and acting all kinds of shifty.

“Did you hear me? You’re not driving toward town.” He continued to ignore me, his knuckles white as they held onto the steering wheel in a vise grip. “Hey, quit fucking ignoring me.” I slapped the back of his seat, but when he still refused to answer me I screamed at him. “Stop this car right now.” My fingers wrapped around the door handle as I shifted closer to the passenger side. “I will fucking jump from this car if you don’t stop this instant.”

He looked up and sighed.

I could see the turmoil in his expression as he squeezed his eyes closed briefly.

“Look, lady, I don’t know what you’ve gotten yourself into, but if I don’t take you where I’m supposed to—he’ll kill me.”

“Who will kill you?” I started jerking on the handle, panic setting in when it didn’t give. “Do you know who I am? I’m the fucking state prosecutor… you hear me? If you do this, you’ll seal your fate and spend the rest of your life in prison for kidnapping.”

“Fuck.” His hands tightened around the leather. “This is messed up. You know that, right? I’m just a fucking cab driver.”

“Slow down a little, and I’ll jump. You can tell whoever threatened you I escaped from the moving car, okay? Just don’t take me wherever there is.”

He mulled over my words for a moment before easing the car to the edge of the road. Fortunately, we were on a two-lane road shrouded in trees. If I had to guess, we weren’t anywhere near Michael’s. I’d been so trapped in my head going over their meeting with Agent Jackson, I hadn’t paid any attention to the drive… until right then.

“I don’t want to die, but I can’t in good conscience do this,” he whispered, refusing to make eye contact with me.
